Other (describe)
The Migratory Bird Treaty Act provides protection for over 800 species of birds from direct harm. However, avian ecologists have recently examined long-term population trends and have concluded that many neotropical migrant species are experiencing a significant decline in numbers. Reduction and fragmentation of breeding and wintering habitats, especially forests, is frequently cited as a primary cause for shrinking populations of migrants.
This project will provide valuable data concerning neotropical migrant utilization of Cape Canaveral AFS. Currently, this aspect of CCAFS biota is not well defined. Specific management actions resulting from this investigation will ensure the maintenance of suitable stopover and overwintering habitats for neotropical migrant land birds. Efforts to conserve neotropical migrants will go far in maintaining or possibly enhancing biological diversity on CCAFS.
