3. Project description (100 words or less)
This project involves restoring the Hanalei River and its supporting watershed into as natural a state as possible and as close to its original pristine nature as possible. In the process, it is also hoped that an economically healthy community will be established to watch over and continue to sustain this valuable resource and the endangered species which are a part of it.
4. Goals/Benefits (quantify where possible using measures of success list) Was a cost-benefit study conducted for this project? yes/no If yes, provide a summary of findings.
There are seven main goals of this project:
1) To work with the Hanalei Community through the Hanalei River Hui to maximize the ability of the Hui to realize its own vision and plans for the Watershed.
2) To resolve the problems of water quality in the River and Bay and reduce or do away with the associated problems related to leptospirosis, sewage, sedimentation, nutrification, pesticides, and petrochemicals
3)To investigate the hydrology and aquifer boundaries and channel requirements in order to stabilize stream flow and stream beds and provide models that will enable better managements of runoff sources and prevent, in the long term, changes that destabilize cultural, wildlife, and economic balances
4) To inventory and evaluate the threat of the alien invasive species found in the waters and the lands of the watershed, and determine their relative role in contributing to the decline of the River quality
5) To inventory and evaluate the extent and distribution of native endangered species in the watershed including aquatic, marine, and terrestrial organisms and attempt to determine what unhealthy aspects of the environment are causing their decline.
6) To develop GIS layers which accurately reflect location and distribution of each species mentioned above in 3 and 4, and determine where the "hotspot" trouble areas are in the watershed and use this information to attempt to produce a landscape-scale set of management options based on Decision Support System models
7) To develop an overall model of what a healthy watershed should look like, and supply a set of management options to strengthen operation of the Federal agencies in the valley as well as enable the Hanalei River Hui to at least realize its short term 5-year goals
