The cities of New Haven and West Haven, both on the West River, are HUD focus areas. The West River is highly urbanized and heavily used by city residents. A large tidegate has effectively turned the salt marsh at the river's mouth into hundreds of acres of Phragmites. An analysis is needed to determine if the river can be managed without this tidegate. The USACE's Section 22 WRDA Program in a cost sharing arrangement with CTDEP will fund this analysis. Other issues pertaining to the West River include anadromous fisheries migration and spawning habitat, water supply needs and low flow augmentation, as well as flooding and recreation. Currently, the NERIT is reviewing their programs to determine solutions for the West River.
