Approximately 400 acres in Lyme and Old Lyme are the home to 10 state rare plant species, 4 rare state bird species, and wintering bald eagles. About 200-acres of the marshes at Lord Cove have been covered by phragmites, which is slowly destroying the habitat. The Nature Conservancy in the second year of a 3-year program to control phragmites. The method of treatment cannot deal with individual plants, additional funding is needed for hands-on managing of the isolated phragmites totaling $5,000-$7,000.
