The Bangor Hydro Electric Company owns the Howland Dam, which is located on the confluence of the Piscataquis River and Penobscot River. It has been reported that the owners will divest themselves of this dam. It would be desirable to remove this dam as it currently hinders anadromous fish passage to much of the potential spawning and nursery habitat in the Penobscot River watershed. Removal will restore a large amount of anadromous fish habitat and reduce the degree of flooding in the town of Howland.
