Other (describe)
The Grist Mill Dam on Souadabscook Stream is at the head-of-tide and is the most significant barrier to upstream migrating fish. Fish passage has been hindered at this dam for nearly two hundred years which, in turn, has effectively eliminated the Souadabscook watershed?s anadromous fishery. The owner has petitioned the FERC for approval to remove the dam. This action will restore habitat and reopen miles of stream to anadromous fisheries. Other benefits include: (1) reduced minor flooding in upstream areas (2) reduced threat to the US Rt. 1A and bridge from erosion and ?piping? of fill from the road (3) reduced erosion of the upstream properties and the Hampden Water District and (4) improved canoeing ability. The Department of the Army has agreed to remove this dam as a military training exercise.
