The EPA National Estuarine Program office for Naragansett Bay has the lead in restoring the ecological productivity of this large Rhode Island embayment. The Coastal America partners are working together to assist in a long-range watershed based effort to address NPS pollution effects on commercially important shellfish resources. This effort will include the development of a stormwater management plan to reduce wet weather pollutant loadings, restoration of eel grass habitat, and restoration of the bay scallops. The Corps of Engineers is providing technical support in defining the hydrology of the watershed through cost shared (Sect. 22) study. NOAA and FWS are also participating in a long term goal to reduce coliform contamination of shellfish beds and expand the submerged aquatic vegetation (eelgrass beds).
