The Coopers Mills Dam impounds a small flowage of water in the town of Whitefield. The dam is in poor structural repair and requires significant reconstruction to enable fishway operation under all flow conditions. The current fishway provides inadequate passage for Atlantic salmon during moderate and low flows. The dams lends itself to debris collection which blocks fish passage regardless of the flow conditions. When flow conditions allow passage, the debris must be removed in order maintain the fishway during the spring and summer migratory seasons. Partial or complete dam removal will optimize fish passage conditions and also eliminate the annual maintenance requirements.
