Hydrologic modifications made for log driving have affected at least 19 miles of the North Branch Penobscot River. Restoration of this area will improve the fisheries of the North Branch, 5 of the Big Bog?s tributary streams and the wildlife values of over 1000 acres of wetland habitat. If a restoration project is begun the current owner of the Big Bog has graciously offered to donate the entire flowage to the State of Maine. The USDA NRCS, Wetland Reserve Program, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, private grants and the Ducks Unlimited Marsh program will provide most of the construction funding. Other partners are currently being sought for technical design and construction assistance.
