3. Project description (100 words or less)
To create and monitor a four-acre tidal wetland on Barren Island in the Chesapeake Bay that will demonstrate: 1) the beneficial uses of drege material on tidal marsh creation and 2) the effectiveness of community involvement in tidal wetland restoration and monitoring projects.
4. Goals/Benefits (quantify where possible using measures of success list) Was a cost-benefit study conducted for this project? yes/no If yes, provide a summary of findings.
The NAIB has initiated its wetland restoration project on Barren Island in the Chesapeake Bay to help offset wetlands losses and to restore critical habitat on the Bay region. In addition, Barren Island represents a unique opportunity to restore fish habitat using a community-based approach as well as a technology, the beneficial use of dredge material, that could have broad application in the Chesapeake Bay. The project targets key recreational fish species including striped bass, speckled trout, weakfish, shrimp, and blue crabs. The project will also benefit habitat for avian species including black ducks, herons, egrets, and bald eagles.
