3. Project description (100 words or less)
The Nature Conservancy proposes to establish at least six (6) monitoring stations that would cover three (3) sub-watersheds within the project area. These sub-watersheds currently do not have monitoring programs on them nor do they have historical data. For these reasons we propose to do weekly monitoring for basic parameters in order to obtain background data.
The Conservancy will work with the Alabama Water Watch (AWW) program, a statewide water quality monitoring network, in order to provide citizen volunteer training and certification. AWW will also be the clearinghouse for data, adding the data to an already existing statewide database. This will then allow AWW to provide maps and graphics for the area data. The project would address aspects of the Gulf Program's public health and nutrient enrichment issue areas.
In addition to basic water quality parameters (air temperature, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, alkalinity, hardness, and turbidity) volunteers will be trained and certified for bacteriological monitoring. This will be done on a monthly rather than a weekly basis and will again provide background data to these subwatersheds. A preliminary budget estimate for this project is $15,000 for monitoring, equipment, travel, training and staff time.
