Modified the old U.S. hydroelectric power house, acquired by the Corps of Engineers under the River & Harbor Act of 1909, by the installation of six permanent collection traps on the east face of Unit 10 race adjacent to the hydroelectric power plant. The objective is to reduce the numbers of parasitic sea lampreys, a non-native species in the Great Lakes.
The installation of the 6 permanent traps a reduction in the number of fish killed annually is approximately 2%. It is estimated that the 2% reduction is equivalent to an amount of $80,000 annually.
The Federal government, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, in coordination with the project sponsor, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, completed the project. Federal government share was 75% of the total project cost.
The non-Federal sponsor, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, provided 25% of the total project costs. Future operation and maintenance costs are 100% non-Federal.
