3. Project description (100 words or less)
The Ophir Creek watershed serves as spawning and rearing habitat for large population of pacific salmon and trout species. Important sport, commercial, and subsistence fisheries rely on production from the Ophir Creek system. The areas's coho salmon sport fishery is world renowned. The productive anadromous fish habitat of Ophir Creek has been impaired by past land-use practices including road construction, development and logging.
A Wildlife Extension Agreement was signed with Yak-Tat Kwaan Tribal Council in 1995. This reimbursable agreement calls for the restoration of salmonid fish production capability in Ophir Creek through: 1) stream-cleaning of one-mile of log-choked former coho and chinook salmon spawning and rearing habitat that is now inaccessible due to effects of logging and 2) retrenching logged forest lands to redirect surface flow into the historic creek headwaters which are now dry.
