SOUTHEAST |
Rock Dredging at Wilmington, Delaware - Establish offshore reefs with used construction materials. Fort Pierce Dredged Material, Florida - Fill a 16 acre borrow hole with dredge material to restore coastal habitat. San Juan Harbor Dredged Material, Puerto Rico - Create a mud island from maintenance dredge material to restore mangrove habitat. Go to Coastal America '94 Project Status Page |
GULF OF MEXICO |
Apalachicola River Slough Restoration, Florida - Modify maintenance dredging of the Apalachicola River to include the removal of sand blocking the mouth of a slough that provides cool water for resident striped bass during the summer. Hurlburt Field Salt Marsh Development, Florida - Plant smooth cordgrass within an emergent marsh to prevent wave action from eroding/destroying archeological sites. Hurlburt Field Stormwater Treatment Pond, Florida - Construct three stormwater retention ponds to control the off-base runoff from 526 acres. Tyndall AFB Wetland Reclamation, Florida - Restore 130 acres of wetland, and construct a 3,500-foot boardwalk over the restored wetland, beach/dune ecosystem, an adjacent undisturbed wetland, and an upland area. MacDill AFB Native Habitat Restoration, Florida - Remove Brazilian pepper trees that have degraded native habitats, and encourage native plant growth. Keesler AFB Pollution Prevention/Mitigation, Mississippi - Install NPS and shoreline erosion controls and upgrade sewer system. Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge Marsh Habitat Restoration, Louisiana - Build 1,176 foot levee to prevent saltwater encroachment on a freshwater ecosystem. Christmas Bay Habitat Restoration, Texas - Plant smooth cordgrass and place a geotextile tube along the shoreline to protect seagrass beds from contaminants and turbidity. Clear Lake Watershed Habitat Restoration, Texas - Restore 25 acres of salt and brackish marshes lost to subsidence. Matagorda Island Marsh Restoration, Texas - Restore and enhance water circulation throughout the 4,000-acre salt marsh by eliminating barriers to tidal flows between the open bay and the marsh. Robinson Lake Levee Restoration, Texas - Refurbish and replant marsh vegetation along the bayward base of a 5,000-foot levee that protects a 700-acre brackish lake adjacent to the Anuhuac National Wildlife Refuge. Upper Coast Shoreline Erosion Control, Texas - Plant smooth cordgrass along two miles of bay shoreline in the Upper Gulf Coast of Texas. Go to Coastal America '94 Project Status Page |
SOUTHWEST |
Prospect Island Restoration Project, California - Restore 1 228-acres of wetlands and fisheries habitat in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta using dredged material from the Sacramento Deep Water Ship Channel. The project will increase the Bay-Delta wetlands by nearly 11 percent. Pier One Marine Learning Center, California - Establish West Coast marine education center focusing on coastal and marine ecology and emphasizing visitor participation. San Diego Bay Natural Resources Monitoring, California - Evaluate, manage and enhance the fish and shorebird populations in the Bay. This data will be available in a Geographic Information System and other media. Go to Coastal America '94 Project Status Page |
NORTHWEST |
Trestle Bay Aquatic Habitat Restoration, Oregon - Restore benthic and fisheries habitat. Umpqua North Spit Snowy Plover Habitat Creation, Oregon - Restructure and augment the coastal dune structure to enhance piping plover habitat. Coos Bay N. Spit Snowy Plover Habitat Creation, Oregon - Expand existing snowy plover habitat by covering unsuitable habitat with clean sand. Little Clam Bay Intertidal Restoration, Washington - Restore 28-acres of intertidal and shallow subtidal area, including mudflats and fringing saltwater wetland behind a levee by replacing constricting tidal gates with large culverts. Project will improve anadromous fish access to spawning creeks. KENCO Marine Restoration, Washington - Purchase private barge-loading dock on the Duwamish River, remove structures and restore river bank. Go to Coastal America '94 Project Status Page |
ALASKA |
Norway Rat Eradication Project, Alaska - Enhance the migratory bird populations in the western Aleutian Islands by controlling the Norway Rats that prey on them. Training Video for Fishermen on Rat Eradication, Alaska - Develop video to teach Alaskan coastal fishermen the impacts Norway rats have on migratory bird populations, and demonstrate how rats can be eliminated from ship and shore facilities. Polar Bear Plan and Training Video, Alaska - Develop an interaction plan and instructional video for personnel who staff remote long range radar installations. Harlequin Duck Habitat Pollution Study, Alaska - Determine the impacts of chronic oil pollution at Shemya Island, and other areas in the Aleutian Island chain on the harlequin duck species. The information will be used to better manage this species, and prevent further oil pollution impacts. Valdez Harbor Structural Improvements, Alaska - Enhance water quality and circulation through the improvement of harbor structures in Valdez, Alaska. Project should improve juvenile fish habitat.
