In addition to the Coastal America Regional Implementation Teams (RITs) efforts to refine their regional strategies and plan and implement partnership projects, the RITs continue to work on establishing Regional Principals Groups and developing a network of Coastal Ecosystem Learning Centers.

The Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge Restoration Team received a 1998 Partnership Award (see story). There has been more discussion in the NERIT on the use of military for restoration projects, with a possible workshop in the spring.

The MARIT is working with the New York Aquarium to use the military to cleanup a local wetland. Also, there are two projects ongoing with the National Aquarium in Baltimore. On December 5, 1998 the Aquarium volunteers participated in a cleanup of Fort McHenry, with plans for another in the spring. Funds from NMFS will assist in restoration of the site. In addition, the Aquarium is working on expanding a created oyster reef on the Patapsco River.

The SERIT met on December 1, 1998. Peter Stengle of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation attended the meeting, and is interested in working with the SERIT on projects. The team is working to develop a list of project opportunities to assist with fund raising. In order to engage the military, the SERIT may coordinate with an existing meeting of EPA and military organizations in the spring.

The SWRIT met in October, at the Tijuana Estuary. There are several opportunities for the partnership to address problems in the estuary. There is also a need for international support, as much of the estuary is in Mexico In addition, the SWRIT is looking at three wetland restoration projects led by the Army Corps of Engineers.

The NWRIT is planning a meeting for January or February, perhaps in conjunction with a cleanup event.

The AKRIT met in November. Additional funding has been proposed for the Duck Creek project from the Corps. Proposed restoration projects on Chester Creek and Ship Creek may be endorsed by the AKRIT.
