Southeast

Regional Chair: Dennis Barnett (404-331-4580)

The SERIT will meet in Atlanta on April 28, 1998. A contract was awarded in February 1998 for the removal of the Cherry Hospital Dam on the Little River in the Neuse River Basin, North Carolina. This is the second dam removal initiated in the Neuse River Basin in the last four months. Removal of Quaker Neck Dam was initiated in December 1997. These removals are designed to eliminate impediments to anadromous fish migration and help restore the once vital commercial and recreational fishery.

The SERIT has undertaken an outreach initiative to encourage greater involvement of state coastal zone managers, National Marine Sanctuary (NMS) managers, and National Estuarine Research Reserve managers in Southeastern states. At least one state coastal zone management agency and one NMS manager will be represented at the April 1998 SERIT meeting. (See also Demonstration Project with Coastal States Organization)
