Sennebec Dam Removal
Location: Union, Maine
Date: June 23, 2001

Project Purpose: Fish passage for alewife, Atlantic salmon, blueback herring, shad, eel, and resident freshwater fish. Also improves dam safety and water level maintenance in Sennebec Pond.

Brief Description: We plan to build a roughened ramp fishway at the natural outlet of Sennebec Pond. This structure will allow passage of all resident and diadromous fish species, while maintaining the pond at its current level. Following construction of the roughened ramp, we will breach and remove Sennebec Dam, the only substantial obstacle to fish passage in the St. George watershed.

Resource Values: Restored fish passage to 17 miles of the mainstem St. George for Atlantic salmon, blueback herring, eel, and shad, and 1100 acres of lake habit in Sennebec Pond and Quantabacook Lake for alewife. Will also restore over 2000 feet of impounded river to its natural condition.

Cost/Budget: A Preliminary design has been completed (final design in process) and Total Cost for Engineering, Removal, and Construction has been estimated by URS Corp at $210,000. Sources of funds already committed and requested as follows:
NRCS (WHIP):
$50,000

USFWS (NFWF):
$60,000

USFWS (Landowner Incentive Program):
$40,000

Trout Unlimited:
$15,000

Fish America Foundation:
$20,000
(requested)
CWRP $25,000 (requested)

Schedule: Build roughened ramp in October, 2001. Breach and remove Sennebec Dam as soon as roughened ramp is completed.

Permit Status: Have held initial pre-project meeting with ACOE, ME DEP, and other agencies. Permit to be submitted early July. Archaeological and T+E species consultation in progress.

List of Partners: Sennebec Pond Association, River Rehab, Inc., St. George Chapter Trout Unlimited, Trout Unlimited, American Rivers, Coastal Conservation Association, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Gulf of Maine Program, National Marine Fisheries Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Maine Department of Marine Resources, Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Jack Tibbetts, Fred and Dorothy Davis, the Rasmussen Family

What is requested from the ME-CWRP: We are requesting $25,000 in cash. As details for removal and construction are finalized, we may also be able to specify services and or materials (e.g. equipment and operators, concrete, construction and demolition services) that could be donated as well.
