Sebasticook River—Guilford Dam Removal
Location: Newport, Maine
Date: June 19, 2001

Project Purpose: To provide for natural passage of diadromous fish and stream habitat restoration.

Brief Description: The Guilford Dam is an 80+ year-old dam located immediately south of the Route 2 Bridge in the Town of Newport. The dam impoundment feeds a fire protection pond that services the Guilford of Maine Concrete Company facility immediately southwest of the dam site during nine months of the year. An alternate, more reliable, economical source of water for fire protection is being planned. Installation of the alternate supply will eliminate the only known beneficial use of the dam. DMR has evaluated fish passage alternatives for the dam and concluded that the deterioration of the dam makes it a poor candidate for installation of a fishway. Given that the dam will no longer serve a useful function and represents a potential liability to the Town of Newport (the owner), DMR had concluded that removal of the dam represents the best alternative for providing fish passage. DMR is overseeing the dam removal for the Town through a contact with URS.

Resource Values: The removal of the Guilford Dam will provide direct access to approximately 2500 feet of stream habitat. The removal of this dam and the provision of fish passage at three additional non-hydro dams in the Sebasticook drainage will trigger passage at two hydro-electric dams on the mainstem dam on the Sebasticook River. Passage at these two dams and passage at the four non-hydro dams along with passage/removal of the Ft. Halifax dam will open 28 miles of Sebasticook River and over 8000 surface acres of lake habitat to diadromous fish.
