Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership East Machias Dam Removal
Project Purpose: The proposed project will finalize the removal of the East Machias Dam and restoration of the riverine and riparian habitats. Brief Description: The East Machias Dam removal was conducted as a Coastal America partnership project by the US Air Force Red Horse Unit as a training exercise in conjunction with the riverine and riparian habitat restoration by the other partners. The final phase requiring funding is the planting of riparian shade trees and wildlife beneficial shrubs. The military only removed the structure (approximately a $500K Pentagon funded training effort), all other project features are local efforts in association with state and federal programs. Resource Values: Approximately 280 stream miles were restored to complete access as an anadromous fisheries riverine migratory corridor. Cost/Budget: Total project costs and in-kind services exceed $500K. Schedule: Project can be finalized within one year, preferably by fall of 2001. Permit Status: All permits are in hand, final phase is not in water so no additional permits necessary. List of Partners: US Air Force, NRCS, Maine Atlantic Commission, Downeast Salmon Federation, USFWS, NFWF, USACE, Town of East Machias What is requested from the ME-CWRP: The final phase will require services in kind for: a naturalistic shade tree and wildlife beneficial shrub planting plan along 1600 feet of the restored area; $7500 to purchase materials and construction services for large tree and wildlife beneficial shrub plantings.
