Drakes Island Marsh Summary Sheet
Location: Wells, Maine

Project Purpose: Increase tidal exchange and enhance marsh function in 85-Acre partially impounded marsh.

Brief Description: A .9 M (36 in.) culvert substantially restricts tidal exchange to this 85 Acre marsh located in the Rachel Carson NWR and the Wells NERR. Addition of a structure to increase tidal exchange, possibly with a self regulating tide gate, will enhance marsh function and encourage regrowth of marsh vegetation on the subsided marsh.

Resource Values: 85 acres of salt marsh.

Cost/Budget: $297,500 total budget including in kind services. $80,000 is currently committed, $120,000 is pending and $97,500 is needed.

Schedule: Install culvert structure: winter/spring 2003, begin design and permitting immediately.

Permit Status: Permittable winter/spring 2002.
