Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership: Wheeler Refuge Summary Sheet
Project Purpose: Increase tidal exchange on dredge disposal site and adjacent marshes. Brief Description: Enhancement of tidal flooding on the 18-acre dredge disposal area created in 1961 will improve salt marsh function; increase fisheries habitat for striped bass, other sportfish, and bait fish; improve habitat for wading shorebirds; restore historic flow patterns; and reduce insect breeding. Restoration of the adjacent 5-acre remnant natural marsh and replacement of the culvert draining to the York River will enhance marsh function and tidal flow. Improved tidal exchange to the 3-acre marsh west of SR 103 between Bragdon and Pine Islands will reverse deterioration of that marsh. Resource Values: 28 acres of salt marsh. Schedule: Dependent on award of funding in mid-July 2001, work will begin late summer 2001 and continue through late summer 2002. Fish America grant pending (permitting, soil testing and baseline ecological study not included in grant) topographic survey completed, ready for modeling, design and permitting upon receipt of funds or in-kind services. Town plans to replace culvert in FY 2002. Permit Status: Ready for permitting as soon as design is complete. Permit may require testing of dredge spoil at estimated cost of $5,000-6,000. List of Partners: Town of York Conservation Commission, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, Conservation Law Foundation, National Park Service Rivers & Trails program, USACE NED, Town of York Public Works Department, National Marine Fisheries Service, Fish America Foundation What is requested from the ME-CWRP: Assistance with baseline ecological monitoring, restoration project design, project management, permitting, and soil testing, or funding to complete the same.
