The Southwest team strategy focuses on supporting California's coastal and ocean priorities, including the preservation and restoration of coastal wetlands. As of January 2009, the Team has identified approximately 40 projects specifically associated with marine, estuarine and fisheries restoration. In the near term, the Team is focused on promoting partnerships and projects that can be advanced through agency coordination and cooperation.
In 2007 the Team received a Partnership Award for the Bolsa Chica Restoration project, which restored a critical tidal salt marsh ecosystem. Other projects areas that the Team endorse include Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) projects like the San Francisco Bay wetlands restoration project and the project to remove the San Clemente Day in Carmel River Valley. Additionally, the Southwest supports its two Coastal Ecosystem Learning Centers: the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
